World Fantasy Con, 2011, the last evening of the convention. The panels and discussions and parties are over; people have started to leave. I've helped clear up, and now I'm wandering around the darkened garden, reluctant to call it done.
Luckily, I encounter Sarah Lee Parker, the friendly author from Perth, Australia, together with Grace Goldeen Ogawa, and her mom, Marian; we met the first day and had a great dinner together. They're at a table with some other ladies, among them Heidi Berthiaume, Brandie Tarvin, Nancy DiMauro - all authors - and publisher Celina Summers (Musa Publishing). I join them, and we talk, and soon we're off to dinner together at Pam Pam, a nearby diner.
It's a fun evening. At some point, Marian says something about a sword and a fight in her small California town. We're instantly intrigued. She turns to Goldeen. "Why don't you tell it?" she suggests. Goldeen does. It's an extremely funny story about her holding off an aggressive drunk at 1 a.m. - with the sword she just happens to have under her bed. After he staggers away, she discovers blood on her weapon.
"Ahhh, my carbon-steel blade!" she exclaims, and rushes off to the bathroom to clean it. Shing!
By this time, we're practically rolling with laughter. "I like that when you discover blood, you don't worry about whether you got cut or he got hurt, you go clean your sword," someone remarks.
Goldeen looks surprised. "I've read the books. I've seen the movies. I know you don't put away your blade dirty!"
After the story is over, and we've recovered our breath, someone says, "You know, when you tell a story like this to a table-full of writers, you're going to be reading this story in various forms for the next year!"
That's when Celina decides on an anthology. And that's how I have a new story in a new e-anthology from Musa Publishing: "Stalking the Monster Lizard" appears in the just-published anthology, Jack Gorman Got Cut by A Girl.
It's available from Musa Publishing, and on Amazon, in a bunch of electronic formats. It's a fun read, as you might imagine, as six authors follow hapless Jack on his adventures through time and space.
